Spring Inspirations For You
Spring is my favorite season. As someone who tends a garden and vegetable patch, I find inspiration in the work that comes with this time of year and in the renewal that follows winter. One of my favorite tasks is pruning—cutting away dead branches to free the plants, let them breathe, and make space for new buds. The most tiring job, on the other hand, is raising the garden beds and clearing them of weeds to prepare for new vegetable plantings.
Another aspect I love is planning plant companions—choosing which flowers and aromatic herbs to grow alongside vegetables so they can support each other by keeping pests and diseases at bay. This is the philosophy of the synergistic garden, from the Greek meaning "acting together." So, I carefully decide where to plant marigolds, calendulas, basil, nasturtiums… and I can’t wait to see the garden beds fill with color!
Then there’s the pond, which needs to be cleared of dried papyrus and overgrown water iris to allow the water lily to rise gracefully from the mud once again this year.
This world, along with my passion for the wildlife that visits our garden and vegetable patch, fills me with beauty and inspires me to draw.
From all of this come designs of elegant columbines, imaginary flowers, pollinators, magnolias, lilies of the valley, and even magical garden creatures like fairies and gnomes. In short, a little something for everyone!
